Some of our walks
Around Salir do Porto:
Walk to the old mill on the hill to get a view of the surrounding area, then through the heath to the ocean followed by a climb to the top of the cliff to the ruined chapel of Sant`Anna at the end of the bay, then down to the fresh water spring at the bottom of the headland returning to the village along the breach.
The bay of Obidos:
Starting point is the sanctuaria Senhor da Pedra, beneath the medieval town of Obidos. There is a steep climb to the little chapel of Saõ Antonio the hermit and then down the fertile valley to the hamlets Traz do Outeira and Nadadouro to the bay of Obidos. The walk ends at the huge beach of Foz do Orelho.
The three Valleys walk:
Starting point is the market town Alfeizerao. From here we head to the hills. A climb up to enjoy the view, then descend to the peaceful valley of Hastes, where we relax by a spring followed another nice climb. The walk ends at a bed and breakfeast run by friends of ours.
The beach walk:
Starting point is the South of the bay of Obidos. Down along the cliffs, along the beach to the village of Baleal which sits on a rocky peninsula. Then to the spectacular rocks at the coastline at Peniche.
The mountain walk:
Along the salt pans of Rio Maior to the Candeerios mountains. Walk in the clear mountain air. Start point is the village of Arrimal. Climb to the top of the Cabeco Gordo. Descend along the sheep tracks to the west of the mountains.
Fishing villages:
Start point San Martinho do Porto. Up a stairway cut into the rocks to a little chapel with a view over the ocean where, in bad weather, the fishermen’s wives used to wait for their husbands to return. Over the cliffs, up and down, to the picturesque fishing village Nazare.
Sunday - Market day
Visit to the large market in Santana at the foot of the Candeeiros. Your purchases can be transported to the villa by car, whilst we walk back through pretty villages, woods and valleys.
Visit to two cities.
First we visit the medieval city Obidos. We can make a walk around on the old citywall and stroll through the narrow streets and little squares. In the afternoon we take the bus to Caldas the Rainha, the Queen’s city of the hot water springs, then the Queen’s woods, the King’s sculpture garden, the tile museum, the daily vegetable market and the Igreja do Populo.
Alcobaça
A shorter walk from the little city of Valado, through villages, hills, woods and fields to Alcobaça. Here we will visit the impressive monastry where Portugal´s most tragic lovers, Pedro and Inèz are burried.
Valley of the Tornada
We start our walk in through the wetlands of the Tornada. We continued our walk through the forrest, were we encounter a deserted hamlet and the remains of a resin factory. By a path along the river we walk back to Salir do Porto.

Following the Portugese way Peter picks us up at the end of the day to bring us home. The following day he drives us to the same spot, were we continued our walk. The total distance is 40 miles.
